One Small Should Bye™ - Week 5: Meet Her Again, Saying Should Bye™

Meet Her Again

She isn’t who she was before motherhood, marriage, grief, divorce, caregiving, or the last child left home. She doesn’t need to become someone new—she needs to reconnect with the woman she is today.

By now, you may be hearing the word “should” everywhere.

You may notice it when you look in the mirror, check your calendar or consider saying no to something you never wanted to do.

That awareness is where the Should Bye™ Method begins.

A should appears.
You pause long enough to hear it.
You become curious about where it came from and decide whether it still deserves a place in your life.
Then you make a more honest choice.

Sometimes the honest choice is, “Yes, I need to do this even though I don’t feel like it.”

Paying bills and keeping commitments are still part of life.

Should Bye™ isn’t about walking away from every uncomfortable responsibility.

It helps you recognize the difference between responsibility and guilt.

Responsibility says, “I’m choosing to do this because it matters to me.”
Guilt says, “If I don’t do this, I’m a bad person.”

Those two voices create very different lives.

You may not be ready to release your biggest should. That’s okay. Start with one that has been taking up more space than it deserves.

Say Should Bye™ to attending something out of obligation.
Say Should Bye™ to waiting for a different body before buying clothes that fit.
Say Should Bye™ to apologizing every time you need help.
Say Should Bye™ to calling yourself lazy because you sat down.

Choose one.

It may feel awkward at first. You might still feel guilty after you say no. The people around you may need time to adjust, especially if they benefited from you always saying yes.

You don’t have to wait until the guilt completely disappears. Sometimes you make the choice while the guilt is still talking and discover that you are capable of moving forward anyway.

That small decision becomes proof.

You can listen to yourself.
You can disappoint someone and still be kind.
You can change your mind.
You can want something without building a courtroom case for why you deserve it.

Meeting her again happens through those small moments. Each honest choice lets you know her a little better.

As September ends, think about the should you are ready to release.

Write it down.

Then ask yourself what you would like to choose in its place.

It doesn’t have to change your entire life.

It only has to sound like you.

Should Bye™.
