Meet Her Again

She isn’t who she was before motherhood, marriage, grief, divorce, caregiving, or the last child left home. She doesn’t need to become someone new—she needs to reconnect with the woman she is today.

When we talk about meeting ourselves again, our minds often return to the woman we used to be.

The younger woman who laughed more easily. The woman who played music while she got ready, stayed out late with her friends or wore something without worrying whether her stomach looked flat.

You may miss how spontaneous she was. You may miss her confidence, energy or willingness to try something without researching it for three weeks first.

Life happened after that.

You became responsible for more people. Your body changed. Relationships changed. You experienced things she hadn’t experienced yet. You learned lessons she didn’t know she needed.

Of course you aren’t exactly the same woman.

But there may be pieces of her that you miss.

Maybe you miss dancing.
Maybe you miss reading for no reason other than enjoying the story.
Maybe you miss getting dressed up, being silly or having an afternoon when nobody knows where you are.

Missing those parts of yourself doesn’t mean you need to recreate your old life. It may mean something inside you is asking for attention.

Instead of asking, “How do I get the old me back?” try asking, “What did she have that I want more of now?”

Maybe it was freedom.
Maybe she gave herself permission to be curious.
Maybe she made room for pleasure without needing it to be productive.

You can bring some of that energy into the life you have today.

Put on the music.
Call the friend who remembers your ridiculous side.
Wear the outfit.
Order what you actually want from the menu.
Take yourself somewhere you have been waiting for someone else to suggest.

It doesn’t need to be a major life change. Sometimes meeting yourself again happens in a five-minute decision.

The shoulds will probably have opinions.

You should finish your work first.
You should spend the money on something practical.
You should act your age.
You should wait until someone can go with you.

Listen to those thoughts, then decide whether they deserve to make the decision.

This week, think about something you miss about yourself.

Choose one small way to welcome that part of you into your current life.

She doesn’t need you to return to the past. She wants to be included in where you are going.

Go meet her there.
